The MAYFLOWER MOVERS GUIDE

Be Prepared For Your Move

As you prepare for your upcoming move, this timeline is great to keep in mind. Our team has worked to outline a variety of associated “to-dos” connected to planning and preparing for your relocation.

week0

8 WEEKS BEFORE MOVING

Schedule your in-home estimate or virtual survey and book your moving date as soon as you are able.
If you are moving through your employer, be sure to check their moving policy to confirm services your mover is authorized to perform.
Be sure to identify all the items to be moved as a part of your relocation for the most accurate pricing estimate. Added items, boxes, and furniture pieces can increase the cost of your shipment, which is based on weight.
Be sure to clarify any questions about your estimate or the process and then sign your estimate and order for service.
Be sure to note the name and phone number of your sales person and move coordinator so you have a direct point of contact as you begin planning for moving day.
Decide on the type of move; full-service, self-pack, or DIY relocation and plan to purchase supplies, as needed.
week4

4-6 WEEKS BEFORE MOVING

Complete your change of address form through the USPS and setup mail forwarding, if needed.
Prepare a list of service providers and people who need to be notified of your change in address including:

Utilities Services

Medical service providers (if moving long-distance)

Mail Subscription Services

Banks and Financial Institutions

Credit Card Billing

Government Agencies (IRS, DMV, Social Security Administration)

If you plan to sell items before moving, begin preparing for a yardsale or collecting items for on-line sale through sites like Facebook Market Place, Nextdoor, LetGo, or OfferUp
Separate items for donation, and consider making a donation to our Move for Hunger program by donating non-perishable food items from your pantry prior to moving day!
week2

2-3 WEEKS BEFORE MOVING

Be sure to provide updates if there are any changes to the size of your shipment, moving dates, or addresses.
Be sure to provide your moving company with addresses and contact information so that your driver and crew can reach you on moving day, if needed.
If your car is being move, be prepared to drive it to a suitable loading site
Confirm any extra stops required to pick-up or deliver items to your new home.

Preparing Your Family

Make plans to visit some of your favorite local spots together before moving
Plan a going away party to celebrate with friends and neighbors if you’re moving out of town.
Make your family travel plans for moving day. If necessary, book hotel rooms and airline tickets, and make sure your care is tuned up for a long drive, if needed.

Preparing Your Household Items

Be sure to check our list of non-allowables and remove these items from any boxes or containers that will be loaded onto the moving truck. For the safety of our employees and your belongings, A1 Bestway will not ship flammable substances, chemicals, and other hazardous materials.
Set an appointment with service technicians to prepare large electronics and appliances for transit.
Schedule a date to disconnect utilities after moving day
Have rugs and draperies cleaned at the cleaners and leave them wrapped to protect them during relocation.
Obtain appraisal of antique items for record of value, do no wax or oil wooden antiques before moving, as some products might soften the wood making it vulnerable to imprinting from furniture pads.
Do not clean upholstered furniture before moving. Moisture can cause mold if furniture is required to be placed in storage.

1-2 WEEKS BEFORE MOVING

Decide what to do with your houseplants. We cannot transport them in our trucks as there is a large risk for damage due to lack of sunlight, water, and potential temperature changes during transit. It’s also important to verify if your plants can be transported to your new state.
Take your pets to the vet and make sure they have up to date shots, certificates, and identification tags.
Make plans to empty out storage units, crawl spaces and attics and bring items into the main space in your home so it is visible and ready for moving day.
If necessary arrange for transportation of your pets, if you are not driving.
Collect any items that are being cleaned, stored or repaired and make sure you have them on hand before moving day, to ensure nothing gets left behind.
